    Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS): Trades

    What is a trade?

    A trade under ATS refers to a specific occupation or skill set for which structured practical training is given in industries or establishments.

    Categories of Trades

    Designated Trades

      • Officially notified by the Government of India under the Apprentices Act, 1961.
      • Usually aligned with ITI trades (NCVT/SCVT certified).

    • Mechanic (Motor Vehicle)
    • Draughtsman (Mechanical/Civil)
    • Electronics Mechanic
    • Instrument Mechanic

    • Carpenter
    • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
    • Painter (General)
    • Wireman
    • Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA)
    • Stenographer (English/Hindi)

    Optional Trades

    • Introduced to give flexibility to industries to design their own trades as per their needs.
    • Employer defines syllabus, duration, and assessment in consultation with SSCs (Sector Skill Councils).Examples:
      • Retail Sales Associate
      • Logistics Assistant
      • Hospitality Steward
      • Healthcare Assistant
      • Apparel Sewing Machine Operator
      • Food Production (Cook)

      Number of Trades

      • Over 250+ designated trades.
      • Numerous optional trades depending on industry requirement.

      Eligibility per Trade

      • ITI pass-outs join directly into apprenticeship in the same or related trade.
      • Freshers (without ITI) can join certain trades directly and learn basic skills during apprenticeship.

      Syllabus and Content

      • Follows NCVT syllabus for designated trades.
      • Combines on-the-job practical training + related theoretical instruction (RTI).
